Organisatie

KU Leuven, Departement Architectuur, Campus Gent
The Department of Architecture is responsible for the research in Architecture, Interior Architecture, Urbanism and Spatial Planning at the Faculty of Engineering Sciences (campus Leuven) and the Faculty of Architecture (campuses Brussels and Ghent). The department is an international expertise center in these domains and houses some 150 (international) PhD-students (www.architecture.kuleuven.be). The Faculty of Architecture groups the academic educational programmes in Architecture (Interior Architecture, Architecture, Urbanism and Spatial Planning) of the Sint-Lucas Brussels/Ghent campuses. The faculty is responsible for the teaching activities (www.arch.kuleuven.be).

Functieomschrijving

At the Science, Engineering and Technology Group of the KU Leuven, the Department of Architecture, research unit Architecture & Building Technology, we are looking for an enthusiastic, creative and communicative researcher with a degree in Architecture, Engineering Sciences or equivalent, to strengthen the research group BRIDGES at the Sint-Lucas Ghent campus. The candidate is expected to achieve a PhD degree in a period of 4 years. The young research group BRIDGES (Bridging Architectural Design & Engineering Sciences) aims at building bridges between architectural design and engineering sciences by focussing on the conceptual design collaboration of architects and engineers in which architectural as well as building technical qualities are pursued. The research strives to enrich the architectural discourse and to instigate creative interdisciplinary design processes in which architectural and engineering knowledge is required, more specifically on matters of acoustics, construction and structure. Research not only focusses on design collaboration practice, but also on building technical education in architecture programmes, leading to findings applicable in architectural practice as well as in education. Project The envisioned PhD project is situated within the vision of the research group BRIDGES and focusses more specifically on the conceptual design phases of integrated architectural and structural design. Decisions made during these phases, often occur in the early stages of design and have a significant impact on the final design outcome. Architects and structural engineers collaborating during conceptual design, requires an appropriate communication that allows for a rich information exchange between professionals from different disciplines and cultures. The project aims to develop new insights and approaches in conceptual design collaborations between architects and structural engineers. The specific research topic will be determined in participation with the chosen candidate. A non-exhaustive list of possible research topics is presented here: graphical software development for conceptual design collaboration between architects and structural engineers; structure as architectural design generator; the physical model as a bridge between structural and architectural form finding; early design communication between architects and structural engineers; architectural translation of structural possibilities in existing buildings for renovation design. In his/her application the candidate is required to provide a proposal for a PhD project within this envisioned domain. This proposal briefly describes the research topic, approach/method, expected outcomes and the candidate’s motivation for engaging in this project.
